島原（しまばら）湾に囲まれる島原半島の中央に鎮座する雲仙普賢岳（うんぜんふげんだけ）ふもとの旧深江（ふかえ）町地区を貫く水無（みずなし）川周辺は、大火砕流に襲われて周辺一帯が飲み込まれ、報道関係や火山学者などを含む死者・行方不明者43名の犠牲が出ました。その後、復興に向かうものの、交通網が寸断されて不便な生活を余儀なくされました。今では火砕流発生でも交通網復旧を早期実現するために、国道57号・国道251号バイパスがまだすロードが高架橋の形で整備され、そこから島原湾を前方に臨む絶景区間があります。火砕流災害復興のあと土砂災害にも見舞われ、復旧に大きな設備投資を実施したにもかかわらず赤字経営となった島原鉄道南目線区間も2008-03までで廃止となり、少し寂しい地域となってしまったかもしれません。編集ミスで途中区間がごっそり抜けてしまったため、いずれ口之津付近を中心に再掲します。 ぜひ、絶景眺望走行動画など、ドライブ気分に浸って頂き、満喫頂ければと思います。
